Introducing Umbra, a colorful free theme for bloggers

umbra-preview-post

Umbra is a colorful new WordPress theme. Powered by Jetpack’s Tonesque library, Umbra derives its palette from your very own images, or from a color you pick.

Dynamic Colors

If you have Jetpack installed and active, the theme will pull a color from the first image it finds in your post, and use that to generate a color scheme for the page. You can also set the default scheme just by choosing a single color.

Social Menus

We’ve made it easy to add links to your social accounts. Just follow the handy instructions located on our documentation page.

Fully responsive

Umbra is fully responsive, working well on everything from your phone to your large monitor.

Jetpack enabled

Supercharge Umbra with Jetpack galleries, carousels, infinite scroll, and Photon.

You can also check out Umbra on Github if you’d like the source files.

  1. It’s a beautiful theme. Thank you for creating a good theme.

  2. I have a question about this. I’m good with websites/code/etc, but new to WordPress and Themes. I’ve got a couple of things I’m trying to do:
    * Remove the second set of “little menu buttons” on the main page navigation bar
    * Add a tag cloud and search to it (widgets)
    * from the “view post” page it would be nice to not have the sidebar widgets on that at all

Do you have any suggestions on how I can go about doing this?

    • Hi,

Remove the second set of “little menu buttons” on the main page navigation bar

Can you elaborate on what you mean by little menu buttons? Thanks!

Add a tag cloud and search to it (widgets)

If you go to Appearance –> Widgets, you can add both a tag cloud and search widget to your site. Here’s more info on using widgets in WordPress: http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Widgets

from the “view post” page it would be nice to not have the sidebar widgets on that at all

If you’re using the Jetpack plugin, you can use the “Widget Visibility” feature to hide widgets from displaying on specific pages or posts: https://jetpack.me/support/widget-visibility/

  3. Great theme!

But, no pic/video in the main page 🙁 How can i setup to show some picture or video?

    • Hi there,

You can add images and videos to your homepage through your media library. Here are some instructions for adding media to your page. If your homepage is set to display your most recent posts, you can add a photo or video into a new post and mark it as “sticky” so it always stays as the first post in your list.

Edit: Sorry, just realized that Umbra only shows excerpts on the homepage. To show the full post content, including images and videos, you’d need to make a child theme, and then edit the homepage template to show the full post instead of excerpts.

  4. Thank you for this very nice theme. Just one question. I was wondering if it is possible for me to add a right-sidebar widget area to this theme, just to have a little more space to work with. I am thinking I need to modify the functions.php and sidebar.php, but I do not know where to start. I have a child theme for this. Thanks!

  5. Hi, I got an error and can’t fix it. Please help. This happens after I put in images into the page.

Fatal error: Class ‘Tonesque’ not found in /home4/benjamin/public_html/wp-content/themes/umbra/inc/dynamic-colors.php on line 132

    • Hi there,

Can you try turning off “Auto Color Posts” in the Customizer and see if that stops the fatal error?

If possible, it would be great if you could open up a new support thread on our support forums and list out the plugins you’re using on your site, along with their version numbers, so we can figure out where the conflict is coming from: https://wordpress.org/support/theme/umbra We’d especially like to know what version of Jetpack you’re running. Thanks!
